Clueless in Chicago

I have no idea what kind of succulent this is but I really like its graphic quality. There is a new florist in the neighborhood, Christine Noelle Designs, and as I was walking by the other day I spied it in the window and couldn't resist.

The new floral studio is beautifully designed and the flowers are out of this world. I complemented them on such a wonderful space etc. and asked if they had other locations. "Yes." they said, "Dilly Lilly." LOL! Ten years ago, Dilly Lilly did the flowers for my daughter's wedding and, though a little out of the way for us, has often been our "go to" florist for very special occasions! Lost in the conversation, I didn't get the name of the plant!

  1. What a splendid little sketch and painting. I love succulents - they're so forgiving .... altho, for some reason, my DIL keeps killing them! Go figure! lol nancy

  3. I really like this! Like you I love the geometric quality. I also like the way you used the darks. Your colors are so interesting and well selected!

So my conclusion is the same - I say enthusiastically, "That is some kind of succulent!"

  4. This is wonderful, your art is most impressive!
It looks like from the Crassulaceae (Orpine?) family, maybe some Aeonium.
May I ask what kind of sketch book you use? It has an unfamiliar format.

  5. Beautiful watercolor for a beautiful plant. Your drawings are so good. I like the idea of having a theme for your sketchbooks.

  8. Thank you all for your warm words on a cold day!

Folarx, I work in custom invitations and greeting cards so there are always odd scraps of paper laying around begging for a drawing or watercolor. This was done on a 6"x6" scrap of watercolor paper. I do often work the square format though, in a Hand•book 5.5 x 5.5 sketchbook.

  9. I love your work and am so happy to find your blog! I look forward to visiting again. I wonder if the plant is a Sempervivum (Hen and Chicks)? The structure and pointy leaves look like it. Btw, I really like the jelly jar with the spoon in it too.
