This Christmas I received a Pocket Palette. I've finally gotten around to filling it! Though the palette will fit a maximum of fourteen pans, I decided to use only twelve.That leaves room for one square pan that I can use for mixing.
There are so many beautiful colors to choose from when designing a new palette it's hard to whittle the choices down to twelve. Hard to choose, but I had fun playing with the paint to see what combinations would give the colors that pleased my eye.
I fell in love with Daniel Smith's Cobalt Teal but wondered if I could make it work in Chicago's light. Experimenting with it and Ultramarine, Verdifer Blue, and Quin Gold, I discovered, yes it can! One of the things I love about watercolor is watching the colors run together with a little push from my brush (either end) and the water. This was a fun and surprising exercise. I share my squiggles and splotches experiments here.
This is how I decided to fill the palette:
- Quin Gold
- Yellow Ochre
- Quin Scarlet
- Burnt Sienna
- Verdifer Blue
- Cobalt Teal
- Sap
- Olive
- Mauve
- Opera
- Buff Titanium
- Ultramarine
…at least for now!
Is Olive a Daniel Smith Color? I LOVE Cobalt Teal and have it in all my palettes, big and small. I have opera, but don't use it much or carry it in my palette, it's a bit too pink, so I'm curious what you use it for. The rest of the list is pretty close to mine, except for New Gamboge, which I've been thinking about dropping because Quin Gold is so close and no since having 2 colors so much alike is there. I'm looking forward to seeing what you create with your new pocket palette.
ReplyDeleteHi, Elaine, the Olive is Schmincke. I rarely use Opera alone, but in mixes with Quin Gold for some interesting brown tones and Ultramarine for deep purples. I've mixed it with Quin Scarlet to tone down the pink but keep the vibrancy.
DeleteLove your littles swatches. I took out MGraham Cobalt teal because it runs over everything. Love the colour though and look forward to seeing it in Chicago sketches.
ReplyDeleteMy Cobalt Teal Blue is Daniel Smith and I haven't run into any problems, but I haven't used it "out and about" that much. Thanks for the heads up!
