Virtual Sketch Date-Oops

This is a quick (15 minutes) value sketch of the image for September's VSD. For some reason I thought I was supposed to post it on Monday and still had time. Well obviously that wasn't right. I didn't want to be a deadbeat sketcher so I present this meager offering. I was gratified to see some of Richard Scott's lessons have taken root!

October is another month.

  1. 15 minutes! Wow!! I really like your value sketch. I hope you go on to do a finished version even though the deadline is past. Your sketch has too much potential not to do more with it. Hope to see you again in October!

  2. Nice quick one. I struggled with this reference photo. The more I worked, the worse it seemed to get. Maybe I should have given myself only a limited time. Seems to have worked for you.

  3. You have your values spot on in this piece. I'm impressed with such a quick capture of the image.

  5. I really like the contrast of the white petals against the dark and textured background - great sketch!

  7. I actually think that this reference can become overcomplicated if studied too long...you've got all the essentials there! Nicely done.

  8. Pretty nice "Oops!" if you ask me! :)
I get too involved in making a complete drawing for these, and forget that the word is 'Sketch'.

  9. Great sketch! I've sent you an award (yes, another one, you're going to get bored with them!) - it's on my blog if you want to pick it up!

  11. Gorgeous......so did you take R Scott's class? Which one? I was salivating over these but thought they were more for designers, architects, landscape folks.....Tell me more!

Gorgeous drawing, and would love to have you email me about the R Scott's classes. I've been wondering about those myself....

  14. Great detail for a value sketch, most of mine you can't even identify what the image is. If this is what you produce in 15 minutes I am very interested in seeing what results from a full session!

  15. Thank you all for your encouragement.

Joanie, I did take Richard's class in May. It was a good mix of designers and sketchers - well worth it.

I blogged about it in May

  16. Very nice sketch; it's got perfect balance, and there's energy too in the pencil marks. Perhaps there is, as other commentors have noted, something to not spending too much time ...?

  19. Thank you again for all your encouraging words, BTW it's done with an Ebony pencil in a watercolor moleskine. I like the Ebony because you can get some really nice darks.
