Where's the Happy Medium?

These two sketches are from our Monday sketch group. The first one was done at the Chicago Cultural Center where we also viewed the Romare Bearden exhibit. The exhibit was extensive and covered his many ways of working. Needless to say it encouraged us to discuss and chat. I didn't get much sketching done.

The second sketch was done last Monday at the Lincoln Park Zoo's new Nature Boardwalk. There wasn't much chatting going on and I produced this overworked watercolor. It was still fun and it's always good to make time to sketch but somehow I must learn to strike a balance between socializing and sketching! LOL

  1. Oh, wow--love both of them. You have the best sense of composition on the page. I love Romare Bearden's stuff. I'll bet that was good! Happy 4th!

  2. Both are very good! The second does not seem overworked to me, which is why I sometimes wonder whether watercolor is truly my medium.

  3. They both have their strong points! I do understand about finding that balance. I generally find myself talking too much and not sketching nearly enough, unless I'm alone!

  4. Is the happy medium in the memory? I like both of these. One is so spare and you wonder what else is there to know. The other is lush and green and you wonder how you can get there - or should I say a reader of your journal would wonder since of course, you know already.

  5. Having just returned from a very brief trip to Chicago, I see there are plenty more sights to see. I love the sketches you are doing - the graphic design quality of the woman and the words is perfect!! I have a Khadi paper sketchbook (given to me from a friend) and it is very absorbent...more pigment, less water and you'll get it right. So far, so good. I've also done some gluing of collage pieces in watercolors on it. Good luck!
